The End of AWT

Just to reiterate AWT will be shutting down in February 2025, not least because subs aren't covering costs and I no longer play, but from a legal standpoint come March I will be liable for up to £18m thanks to new laws introduced in here in the UK https://www.ofcom.org.uk/online-safety/illegal-and-harmful-content/time-for-tech-firms-to-act-uk-online-safety-regulation-comes-into-force/.

I can not afford the money, resources nor effort into making the site and forum compliant. Unless someone is willing to take this off my hands in the next few weeks to keep it going, although no one was forthcoming last time.

So I am setting a hard date of 1st February 2025. I will cancel the few subs at the end of December and turn off the Paypal account to prevent new payments

This community has been around for quite a while now and I am sad to see it go this way, but given the nature of the site and sledgehammer approach by our government to tech it's making it impossible for communities like this to exist.

Thanks all

Hi,

Sad to see it shut down. But would you please put the source on github? Give others the opportunity (or even me) to continue the project.
Maybe in some other form, or in another country where does stupid rules don't apply.

Thx in advance!

I've been asked this before

First of all I don't have direct access to the code and the person that does is very busy and difficult to reach
Secondly, I don't actually own the code... I picked up the ownership of running the site but the copyright to code still technically belongs to Colin and as far as I'm aware he never made it open source.

I'd say "ownership of this game" is hard to define. When Colin left the game he "sold" it to some of the community who put some money together. I think it was something around 300 bucks he got for the game. I am no lawyer, but I would say he gave up his copyright by doing so and it is actually "open source". At least in the forum there was the request for money to "buy the game for the community" that time and not "to buy a license of that game".

If there is an real person the "owner" of this game, then this probably are the people who collected that money that time (Sadly i didn't invest, so i didn't care too much for details of the agreement). I'd say, try to ask Ovaire2terre and thehyena for details of the agreement, since i think they both spent money for the game. There were others too (like stormdog and TheBlacklist for example) but those are much less active or even inactive for quite a while and probably much harder to contact.

Anyway, thx for keeping the game alive for the time it lasted. I didn't push the "like" button to your post because, of course, i don't like to see this game stopping, but i understand and respect the reasons. I love this game and i will miss it much and so i'm thankful for every day i was able to play it.
